Wilson Pickett backed by Jimi Hendrix, NYC, May 1966
This was at an Atlantic Records party, with Cornell Dupree behind Wilson. By the end of the year Jimi was in London getting Experienced. Photography by the brilliant William ‘PoPsie’ Randolph.
More photos from the party (with ugly-ass watermarks) on PoPsie’s website.
BONUS: Here he is on Night Train in 1965 backing Buddy and Stacey on “Shotgun.”

Daphne Oram (1925-2003) was a pioneering electronic musician and sound engineer at the famed BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The Young Americans label has just issued a luxurious 4 LP vinyl collection drawn from Oram’s massive sound archives. “The Daphne Oram Tapes” includes 46 tracks, a total of 2.5 hours of previously unreleased material. And this is just volume one! (via Electronic pioneer Daphne Oram recordings now available - Boing Boing)
Don’t miss Ewen Spencer’s free MiniClick Talk at the Old Market Theatre in Hove. Tuesday, Jan. 10th
The miniclick talks (Brighton’s free, monthly photography talks) ended 2011 on Monday with a great talk by Luca Sage. To kick off 2012, we have an equally exciting speaker lined up for you in Ewen Spencer. Ewen was part of our September panel discussion and we had a load of emails and requests on twitter to get him back to do a talk on his own – obviously his work has captured a lot of people’s imagination and I’m really pleased to announce he’ll be speaking for us on January 10th (doors at 6:30pm, talk will start around 7:30pm)…

“From Up Here”, honorable mention in People category. Stephen “ST 2 Lettaz” Harris, and David “Yung Clova” Williams make up the Huntsville rap duo G-Side. I took this photo of them on tour, conducting a cell phone interview with a journalist on a fire escape in Manhattan. The photo speaks to the “D.I.Y.” nature of the current independent music scene. Digital technology has played a big role in G-Side’s business strategy, enabling them to use the Internet and viral word of mouth to build a diverse international fan base. G-Side released a track in 2011 called “Nat Geo.” Location: Manhattan, NY, USA (© Helen Pearson) (via Winners of the National Geographic Photo Contest 2011 - Alan Taylor - In Focus - The Atlantic)
